Biography

Daughter of the late Swedish diplomat, Count Carl Ludwig Douglas and his wife Ottora, nee Haas-Heye, Rosita Marlborough grew up as a true diplomats child, travelling all over the world, but maintaining very strong ties with Sweden and her family home, Stjarnorp, where her childhood summers were spent with family and friends.

She was born in Madrid, Spain, went to school in Sweden and in the United States. She studied art at Konstfackhogskolan, Stockholm, Sweden and then at the Ecole National Superieur des Arts Decoratives, Paris, France. She worked for Emanuel Ungaro in Paris and as a Freelance Designer in London.

She was married to Sunny, 11th Duke of Marlborough between 1972-2008 and during that time took charge of redecorating and re-designing the interior of the private side of Blenheim. She was actively involved in numerous projects in and around Blenheim, juggling her commitments of running this great house with bringing up two children Edward and Alexandra. She continued to paint, throughout this time, albeit not in a professional capacity.

In 1992, Rosita Marlborough returned to painting professionally. Her first Solo Exhibition, in 1995 in the West End in London was entirely figurative, comprising romantic portraits, horses and dogs depicting human emotion and movement. That same year, she was accepted with two paintings at the Annual Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.

In 1996, she travelled to Morocco and was overwhelmed by the colour and light that she found there. This trip had a profound effect on her and has influenced her painting ever since. Her painting has become more and more abstract, absorbing colour and light in her search to find a perfect harmony of these two elements together with space.

Rosita Marlborough has enjoyed numerous commissions. Her paintings and sculptures are to be found in collections in the United States, the UK, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Spain and Malaysia.

Her passion is the beauty in art and sculpture. Her interests and sports include books on art, more art, design, decorating, riding. and sking.
